Batavia Silver Stars

Christmas will soon be here so a warm welcome to any square dancers wishing to join the BSS for our annual Christmas Pot Luck Supper on Monday, December 15, at 6 p.m. Bring your favorite dish to pass and your place setting. Beverages are provided. An RSVP prior to the 15th would be appreciated. Dancing will start at 7:30 and go until 10 p.m. For this special dance we will be collecting individual food items for the “Backpack Program” at the LeRoy School District.

January 12 is our annual YUMMY Homemade Soup Night. Just right for a cold winter’s night! Donations (anything to run a household) on this night will go to Eagle Star Housing, a home for homeless veterans.

February 9 will be our Sweetheart’s/Valentine Dance so wear hearts or red/pink and bring a special dessert. We will again collect items for Eagle Star Housing. We also continue to collect pull tabs from cans to help with expenses for a young girl with cancer at Strong Memorial Hospital. They will be collected at each dance.

Dancing continues every Monday night 6:30 to 10:00 p.m. except December 22 and 29. It is a good idea to call ahead if weather is inclement.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS.

Belles 'N' Beaus

December promises to be a busy month as usual and the Belles ’N’ Beaus will be celebrating the holidays with a special dance on Monday, December 15 with Ron Brown calling. We will have special holiday desserts and hors d’oeuvres to share with everyone so come and dance to some holiday tunes and help us say good-bye to 2014 as this will be our last dance of the year.

We will welcome 2015 by dancing on Jan. 5 and on the 12th we will have a ’50s sock hop with ’50s music to dance to. Is Elvis in the house? Who knows—He has been here before, but you never know if he will show up or not! Come and find out.

Gil Porter will be calling on Feb. 2 and that is the night we will have our winter picnic. Hot dogs will be cooked on the grill no matter how cold and snowy it is. Why is it that hot dogs always taste and smell so good in the middle of the winter? Hot dog and picnic dinner is free, but if you plan to come, please let Bob & Alice Hager know so we can plan how many to cook for and how much food to prepare. Sure hope you can come! Feb. 9 will be our Valentine’s Dance and you’ll find special chocolate desserts on our food table so you’ll be sure to want to taste them. Even though it is cold out you’ll be sure to find a warm welcome at our club.

Cloverleaf Squares

Our new class members are off to a wonderful start. On October 26 we had the first of our special Class/Club dances “Halloween Spooktacular.” Class and club members from several clubs were in attendance along with some really scary costumes. We have special theme dances scheduled for each month, so keep an eye on the ePromenader and the flyer table at your club.

As we go to press, the new class members are scheduled to join our club for the Thanksgiving Dinner/Dance on November 23. It is an occasion for class and club members to share a meal, dance and get to know each other better.

On October 11 we had our special dance featuring Ed Laudenschlager calling and Lisa Treichler cueing. Ed is a well-known caller from Ohio. Special thanks to all of those who helped set up, man the treasurer’s table, and make and serve refreshments.

For the past several years during the month of November, Cloverleaf Squares has been helping to raise money for “Honor Flight Rochester,” and this year we continued the tradition. Honor Flight Rochester is an organization that flies World War II veterans and terminally ill veterans of other conflicts to Washington DC to visit the WW II memorial and all of the service-related memorials. The veterans are given the welcome home they never received with an honor guard, bands and a thank you talk from the president of Honor Flight Rochester. This is accomplished at no cost to the veterans. Other square dancers are among the over 300 volunteers that make Honor Flight successful. Honor Flight is a not-for-profit organization supported solely by public contributions and receives no government funding.

We have several great events coming up. First, we will be having our annual Class/Club Christmas party on December 14, with a pot luck dinner at 5:30 p.m. to be followed by dancing at 7 p.m. If you are not a club member and wish to join us for dinner, please sign up by contacting a Cloverleaf Squares board member or come dance with us any Sunday and sign up to bring a dish to pass. And don’t forget to mark your calendars for our annual anniversary class/club dance on March 15 2015. See our flyer in this month’s ePromenader!!!

Copy Cats

Copy Cats switched up how we are presenting class this year. From 6:15 to 7:00 p.m., our beloved instructor Ron Brown is teaching “plus” calls. Suggested donation for those learning the “plus” calls is $2.50 per person. Then from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. is our Mainstream class including a quick review of the plus calls.

We had open house on Tuesday, Sept 23, and welcomed 43 enthusiastic guests. It was wonderful! Copy Cats is still having bulging classes and members are working hard to get everyone warmly greeted and workshopped. Thank you to all who are coming on Tuesday nights to help us with class.

Check the schedule for our dances. There is lots of dancing to do. Dec. 20 is the Holiday dance and our first class/club dance. We will be having a pot-luck dinner before the dance at 6:00. Mike Callahan is calling at 7:30. Our dance location is First Baptist Church, 1862 Penfield Road, Penfield. Check out the ads and our schedule for all those opportunities to tap your toes.

In October we supported the Penfield Food Pantry. Copy Cats collected 37 pounds of pasta, 27 jars of sauce, 2 checks and some cash. The people at the pantry were pleased with the large donation.

On November 1, we hosted national caller Tim Marriner at St. John Fisher College. Tim called A2 early in the afternoon, followed by Alice Bubel cueing rounds. Tim and Alice were back again that night. We had approximately 140 dancers that evening including a busload of the Country Twirlers from Selinsgrove, PA. Even new class members from Copy Cats came for the night to see what all the excitement was about! Thanks to all of you for coming out in the rain that day. And the cake was yummy!

Happy Holidays friends and keep up the dancing.

Country Twirlers

After 55 years of square dancing in Chili and Gates, the Country Twirlers pulled up stakes and held a “Trail End Dance” on October 25, 2014. Attending the dance were about 12 squares of guests representing many of the clubs in the Rochester Area Federation. All 13 current club members including our charter members, Al and Esther Fiege, were in attendance. It was indeed a pleasure to once again see a full hall dancing to Gary and Alice Bubel, our last official club caller and cuer.

On a personal note I would like to take this opportunity to thank so many of our square dancing friends for all your thoughts and prayers, visits and “Get Well” wishes sent Kay during her long struggle against cancer. She was really touched by the flow of cards she received. Since her death on September 28 I have been overwhelmed with the outpouring of thoughts, prayers and support expressed personally and in so many cards that you have sent me. It is a great comfort knowing that so many friends are there for you in this time of sorrow and great loss.

THANK YOU !

“Happy Trails to You” until we meet again!

In January, we will be dancing on the 15th and 22nd. Now is the time for exercise to keep your New Year’s resolution about fitness.

We always dance on Thursday evenings, from 7 to 9, at Roth Middle School in Henrietta.

Seneca Silhouettes

Seneca Silhouettes is a comfortable round dance club. We often take time to work out tricky parts. If you are in the neighborhood, we would love to have you join us Mondays from 3:00 to 5:00. If you would like a proposed program, email me at connie.rhogo2@gmail.com before Saturday. We dance at the Trinity Church, 520 S. Main St., Geneva, NY. Main Street is Rt 14 - easy to get to. From the thruway or the south, just stay on Rt 14. From 5 & 20, look for the Rt 14 sign. After you circle to Rt 14, (Main St.), turn left and you are almost there -- the first church on your left. Park behind the church and use the door on the left. We are at the top of the stairs. You will find us dancing on a beautiful wood floor. The program can be easily altered if there is something different that you would like to do.

We should be dancing Martin Luther King Day and Presidents’ Day. We rarely cancel, but it is always a good idea to call to check, just in case we decide to take off for a month.

Shamrock Squares

The Shamrock Squares is a caller-run Advanced (A1/A2) dancing club that meets weekly, every Tuesday, year-round… with rare exceptions for weather and other considerations. We meet at the Pieters Family Life Center, near the junctions of Jefferson Road and Route 15A, just off Castle Road.

Mike Callahan, Rochester’s own national caller, keeps our feet and minds moving, and up to speed on all the latest nuances of our fun-filled and healthy activity; pretty wife Wanda collects your $6 per person/$12 per couple at the door, and that’s it! No dues; no officers; no committee meetings… just dancing, camaraderie and fun; these are the elements that keep us all coming back, along with the sense of “family” we all enjoy.

Drop by some Tuesday evening. Mike starts at 6:45 p.m. and watching is free. Occasionally, residents of the life center drop in to watch, wondering where all the music and laughter is coming from. You might just be surprised, and not want to stop learning when you have mastered Plus. I also hasten to point out that “A” is NOT “instead of” your regular club, but “in addition to” it.

January 2 will be our New Year’s celebration with chili and cornbread to warm us up. In February, we will be seeing red at our Valentine’s Day Dance. Red Shirts ’n’ red Skirts will be on the dance floor.

Our new class members are fast learners. They continue to learn new calls from our callers, Dave and Phil Eno, along with help from club members. Silver Squares

Dust off your snow shovels! Winter is just around the corner, but at Silver Squares we’ll stay warm and cozy at our Monday afternoon dances. We extend an invitation to both couples and solo dancers to join us at the Greece Methodist Church, 1924 Maiden Lane. Please note that we will not be dancing on December 29.

To while away the winter, we’ve planned some special dances. Beginning in January, the last dance of each month will be a class/club dance. January 12 is our Hawaiian-themed dance. Come attired in your favorite grass skirt and lei and dance to the incomparable calling of Mike Callahan.

On January 19, we’ll be jettisoning our New Year’s resolution (you know, the one to lose weight) at our annual pizza dance. (There is a $2 charge in addition to the dance admission.) February 9, we’ll be wearing red at our Valentine’s Day dance. Hopefully, Cupid will arrive with his bow and arrows in hand to help us celebrate.

We’ll pay tribute to our American presidents on February 16 by extending free admission to any of the Rochester Federation club presidents or their designated representative. Considering all that each of you do to keep the Federation strong, it’s the least we can do. We hope you’ll attend.

One last reminder because, after all, it is winter and it is Rochester. If the Greece Central School district is closed due to inclement weather, our dance will also be cancelled. Of course, here’s hoping that that doesn’t happen!

Village Squares

We are dancing every Wednesday in December, January and February, except December 24 (Christmas Eve) and February 18 (Ash Wednesday). Except for December 17 and 31, we start with plus review from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. and transition to a full plus level. Rounds are included between tips. One admission covers an entire evening of dancing.

Our Holiday Dinner Dance on December 17 begins at 7:30 p.m. Reservations are required for the dinner before the dance.

On New Year’s Eve, Wednesday December 31, we are combining a celebration of our club’s 40th Anniversary with a New Year’s celebration. Why the combination? January, the first month of the year, derives its name from Janus, the Roman god of gateways and doors. Janus is depicted as having two faces, one looking forward and one looking back. Every decent New Year’s Eve Party looks back by singing “Auld Lang Syne” before shouting Happy New Year! This year we are looking back at ourselves, our friends, our fellow dancers. To accommodate interspersing these snap shots of the past, we are starting the dance at 8 p.m. instead of the usual 9 p.m. We are again dancing at St. Thomas Episcopal Church. For details refer to our flyer included in this issue of the Promenader. Note that you can, as a couple, save $5 by purchasing your admission tickets in advance.

Wednesday, February 11, is our Mardi Gras dance. Make your most outrageous closet choice. We are prepared to lend you beads.

We will host three FRIDAY dances, one each in January, February, and March (see our Friday Night Dances flyer).

Friday, January 23 is our FREE to all Anti-FREEze Dance. Dancing begins at 7:30 p.m. If a weather cancellation is required, Wednesday, January 28 is the backup date for this dance.

Since Ash Wednesday doesn’t lend itself to a party, we are instead offering a Chinese New Year celebration for the year of the sheep. This will occur on Friday February 20. Dancing starts at 7:30 p.m.

Waterwheel Squares

To welcome December at Water Wheel Squares, we begin with two regular Monday night dances. On December 15, we celebrate the holidays with our annual Christmas Dance. We dance upstairs at the Amherst Community Church on 77 Washington Highway, Snyder, N.Y. 14226 on Monday nights promptly at 7 p.m. There are no dances scheduled the rest of the month.

Kicking off 2015 we begin with a regular dance night and on the 12th of January we have our Hobo Dance. We’ll enjoy hot soup that evening and we each bring canned goods to donate to the church food pantry to help those who are in need. On January 26 we are having a Hat Dance. This is a new dance for our club and I expect we’ll see some exciting creations.

Wrapping up this quarter we will celebrate Valentines Day on February 9 and romantic songs and fancy desserts will help everyone get “In the Mood” for this love holiday. On February 16 we are introducing another new dance for our club members -- Mardi Gras. Rumor has it that our president is flying in fresh beignets for this special evening! But…it’s just a rumor. In any event we’ll all enjoy each other’s company and of course Square and Round Dancing! So, Happy Holidays everyone from all of us at Water Wheel Squares!
